SCIENCE ADVENTURE CAMPS

In Genesis 1:28, God commands us to manage His creation, but to do this we must know how it works, and there is no better way to become familiar with His creation than through hands-on science activities. Learn about God’s creation while participating in a real-life adventure with your family and friends! Conduct hands-on science investigations to learn about the physical, chemical and biological components of an aquatic ecosystem.

6th Annual Alaskan River Float Trips

Registration Deadline: March 1, 2007

Due to popular demand, we are conducting 3 trips this year, two to American Creek and one to Lake Creek. Rob Sadowski, a long-time assistant of Dr. Shormann’s, will be your guide. All trips depart from Anchorage. Arrive the night before and be ready to leave in the morning. Float plane returns to Anchorage between 1 and 4 pm, so schedule your return flight no earlier than 5 p.m. Please read carefully the descriptions of each. Contact Dr. Shormann at diveintomath@sbcglobal.net for an application or if you have questions.

July 14-19, 2007 - 2 spots left! Lake Creek. Cost: $1000 per person. Camp is limited to 11 persons, and can be individual boys (14 and over) or father/son pairs. Take a 1-hr float plane trip to Chelatna Lake at the base of Mt. McKinley, where you will begin a week of fishing, science and whitewater rafting! Fish for all 5 species of Pacific salmon, as well as rainbow trout and grayling. We average 50-100 fish caught per day, keeping a few for food and for study. Expect to see a few bears and moose, and lots of bald eagles. Learn more about God’s awesome creation by conducting hands-on lab activities and performing detailed investigations of the river and surrounding forest ecosystem. Test your rafting skills on class 2 and 3 whitewater. Test your survival skills by collecting and catching your own food. If you don’t mind getting a little wet, sleeping in bear country, and doing lots of fishing, rafting, and science, then this camp is for you! Other costs to consider include your plane ticket (usually around $650 or less), an Alaska fishing license, fishing gear, chest waders, raincoat and miscellaneous personal camping gear. Tents, cots, cookware and food are provided. You need a sleeping bag, waders (I have some for rent), raincoat, fishing tackle, and any other clothes or gear up to 25 lbs max.

July 21-30, 2007 - CAMP FULL. American Creek in Katmai National Park. Cost: $1800 per person. Camp is limited to 11 persons, and can be individual boys (14 and over) or father/son pairs The float plane trip is 2.5 hours and absolutely beautiful, and can be rather bumpy, but it’s worth it, because your destination is one of the most remote places in North America where you will spend a week surrounded by dozens of grizzly bears feasting on the countless sockeye salmon returning to spawn. Huge rainbow trout and Dolly Varden char await you around every bend. The trip begins in the beautiful, deep and clear Hammersly Lake. Excellent hiking is found all around the lake, and spectacular views await you on the surrounding mountaintops. Bears are everywhere; expect to see between 50 and 70, and expect to participate in a “night shift” to protect the campsite from unwelcome visitors! Whitewater is similar to Lake Creek, except there are more logjams to traverse. Daily activities of fishing/rafting/science will be similar to Lake Creek, except more hiking will be available. This trip is not recommended for those with limited outdoor experience. Suggestion: do the Lake Creek trip this year and American Creek next year. Other costs to consider include your plane ticket (usually around $650 or less), an Alaska fishing license, fishing gear, chest waders, raincoat and miscellaneous personal camping gear. Tents, cots, cookware and food are provided. You need a sleeping bag, waders (I have some for rent), raincoat, fishing tackle, and any other clothes or gear up to 25 lbs max

August 1-6, 2007 - 7 Spots Left! American Creek in Katmai National Park. Cost: $1700 per person. Similar to the July 21-30 trip, except less time will be available for hiking/exploring.

About the Guide: My name is Rob Sadowski, and I will be your guide for the 6th Annual Alaskan River Float Trip this summer. Although Dr. Shormann unfortunately will not be accompanying us this year, I have been his assistant for several years, and I would like to think that you are in more than capable hands. This will be my sixth adventure in Alaska. I am currently a senior at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas where I am majoring in Wildlife and Fisheries Management. I have floated both Lake and America Creeks multiple times. I have also worked at a fishing lodge in Southeast Alaska. Fly fishing is an avid passion of mine, having fished the Gulf Coast, Colorado, Alaska, and Montana. I have a good knowledge of the wildlife and fish we will encounter, and have spent many hours studying bear behavior. My first passion above hunting and fishing, is my savior Jesus Christ. It is my hope and prayer that this summer will be a truly unique and rewarding experience; physically, mentally, and spiritually.
